I was surprised to find out that a  lot of vitamin D3 supplements come from Lanolin – so they are not vegan.  I don’t really take many supplements at the moment – I have mainly been taking super foods and smoothies with super foods but not really any supplements.

I think that it is important for me to share that the majority of vitamin D comes from lanolin.  So we must look for vegan alternatives.

You to get vitamin D2 in plant foods, and a sustained diet rich in D2 and sunlight should be enough.  Be sure to get out for a 30 min walk and show your arms and face to the sun.  Full spectrum SAD lights are also good.

Important Information on Vitamin D2 and D3

  • Products that are fortified with Vitamin D may be using the lanolin derivative. It’s best to check with the manufacturer before making a purchase.
  • Most D3 supplements are not vegan
  • Vitamin D2 is always vegan, and research has shown it can be just as effective as non vegan forms of D3

Vitashine has shown research demonstrating that D3 can be derived from lichen and have a fully vegan form of D3 Suppliment.

Source of Life Garden™ Vitamin D3 is vegan

Vitamin D is an essential vitamin required by the body for the absorption of calcium, bone development, immune functioning, and alleviation of inflammation. Vitamin D deficiency can lead to rickets, a weakened immune system, increased cancer risk and poor hair growth. Excess vitamin D can cause the body to absorb too much calcium, leading to increased risk of heart disease and kidney stones.

The current U.S. Daily Value for vitamin D is 600 IU (international units) and the toxicity threshold is thought to be 10,000 to 40,000 IU/day.

So what is the best way to get your daily dose of vitamin D? – firstly from the sun and full spectrum lights.   Secondly from foods:
